Medved Endurance Project

Are you interested in taking your training to another level? Interested in bigger offroad challenges? Do you have a lot of your own experiences that you're willing to share? Medved would like to invite you to participate in our Endurance Project, a three part program that will offer guidance to take on new distances, suggested training, nutrition and gear. I have assembled a team of area ambassadors that hope to inspire as we share our favorite tales, experiences and events. What we hope to pass along can be applied to taking on your first half marathon up to taking the plunge into ultra distances. My mission is that this be a program for everyone, regardless of speed or experience. All I ask is an interest in taking on new challenges, getting out of your comfort zone a bit, a sense of adventure and that you're capable of big grins.

Part I

Thursday, April 1, 2010:  Meet at Medved at 6 PM. Join us for a meeting of the minds (fools??). We'll get the Project kicked off by introducing you to our team of ambassadors as well as Ian Golden, race director of the Virgil Crest Ultras (100 and 50 mile races, 100 mile relay, something for everyone!) that run on some of my favorite trails in the Ithaca area on September 25, 2010. We'll lead a discussion on getting ready for your next adventure, favorite gear, suggested nutrition and learn more about Ian's event.

Part II

Friday, July 16, 2010: Meet at Medved at 6 PM, we have a social gathering planned for program participants. Krissy Moehl, one of the strongest ultrarunners in the world and a great ambassador for the sport, has agreed to visit and spend the weekend with us.

Saturday, July 17, 2010: Krissy and our team will run with the Oven Door Runners, join the group at 6:30 AM in Bushnell's Basin. We'll enjoy a long run, with coffee and conversation after.

  • 12 PM  Krissy will be at Medved, she will lead a presentation on events she's run and answer questions. She is a great resource for learning more about running long and her enthusiasm will inspire.

                                                           Part III

August 2010, date and location still TBD: Join Medved staff and our ambassadors for a long run on one of our favorite trail systems. Put your hard work and chosen gear to the test before the big day. Medved and GU Energy have teamed up to provide aid stations to fuel your day.

Registration Information: $45 program fee, your fee includes:

  • Patagonia performance shirt.
  • A pair of Darn Tough Socks.
  • Entry into the Medved Madness 15 Mile Trail Race on May 2, either as a solo racer or relay participant.

JOHN PROHIRA

John has been infecting many of us with the desire to go long for many years while working here at the shop, he's been very generous with sharing his experiences, gear and nutrition suggestions, and so much more. John and I often talk about the "spiritual" side of running, what these runs mean to us above the shoulders. Since getting the bug in 1998 John has completed over 85 ultras of varying distances, including the famed Hardrock 100 in Southwestern CO, widely known as the most difficult 100 in the country. I pushed him for a favorite memory and he struggled to pick just one, but I love his answer: "watching the second dawn of his first 100 mile race during the Vermont 100, the first time I was lapped by the sun"

TERESA SUKIENNICKI

I have yet to see Teresa not smiling during any adventure whether it's a day of snowshoeing, an area 5K road race or sharing her time working an event. She often has a camera with her as well, capturing some incredible images of experiences from all over the country. She started doing ultra events in 2005 and has since become both a regular participant, pacer and volunteer at numerous events, so many she's lost count! Her favorite memories are more often from either pacing or volunteering at an event, finding it gratifying to assist runners through struggles as they push through to the finish line.

JOY VALVANO

Joy is a veteran of over 30 marathons or longer, including legendary events such as the New York Marathon, Boston Marathon, and the Bull Run Run 50 Miler in VA. As a registered dietitian she also brings an important facet to the team, nutrition both during training as well as race day are a huge part of making it to the finish line. She has provided sports nutrition education to groups such as members of the Metro YMCA and the Genesee Valley Harriers, she's an awesome resource to have as part of the Endurance Project.

KEN SCHAIBLE

Ken brings a well rounded perspective to the group as he takes it all on, from long distance running to snowshoeing, to cycling, to paddling. Much of our discussion can be appplied to any ultra effort and if your interests go beyond footraces Ken brings piles of experiences to learn from. He has completed several ultras on snowshoes, he completed the Dances with Dirt Fifty Mile Race in Hell, MI this past fall, regularly commutes by bike and frequently participates in the TNUA rides Tuesday nights during the winter. Among his many goals for 2010 is to race in the Black Fly Challenge, a 40 mile mountain bike race in the Adirondacks in June.

MARY WHITE

Another infectious personality in our group, Mary is a veteran of many of the area's long runs including the Virgil Crest Ultras. She and I have also shared many of the trails during Finger Lakes Running Club events, such as the Finger Lakes Fifties.

IAN GOLDEN

I've asked Ian Golden to join our group for several reasons: a college All American running career, an experienced ultrarunner and the race director for a few events in the Ithaca area including the Virgil Crest Ultras - an event I want to highlight because I love the trail system and I think it offers something for everyone between the 50 and 100 mile races, as well as the 100 mile team relay. This year's race date is Sept. 25-26, a great time to run offroad in a spectacular setting. Go to www.virgilcrestultras.com for more info.
